The purpose of Life

view from hill

Well,
this is an interesting proposition.

Let me be gentle with myself
and take the easy
way out:

one purpose
to life
is to
be alive
and to
know
we are alive.

and another:
to be alive
and to know that other people
are alive

and another:
to be alive
and know we
and others
are alive
and that the Earth is alive
and to be
of use

to ourselves
to others
and to Earth

and
hey,
what the heck:
to have a good time,
you know,
the happiness thing

while doing it

Car Free Day, Bike to Work Day, New Habit Day

bike day

BICYCLES
Bicycles.

Bikes.

Two wheels.

Fun.

This is part of being a real human: to have fun on a bicycle. To move our legs and have the wheels spin and we almost float, almost effortlessly to somewhere else on this beautiful planet.

Today is Bike to Work day.
Sam Turner

Sam Turner helping to get all the Bike to Work
stuff there,
(there this morning was Olsen Park,
a lovely little hideaway park on the bike path)
on a Bike.
Yeah, Sam.
Yeah, Ken for organizing.
Yeah, Chris (me) for handing out the stuff.

Big deal. Little deal.

Who would drive a car if they could ride a bike and enjoy the fresh air and the exercise and the smells and seeing things close and slow and clear?

Pity the poor robot fools locked away in their automatic automobiles and trucks. Some, of course, need to haul around tools: ah, cars are good for that.

Some need to haul kids, and I'd say: get back to school buses, put the kids on their feet, get a bicycles trailer, but again: hey, hauling kids is sometimes part of life.

But, if you don't have kids or tools, lucky you, you can walk today or ride a bike a stay out of the earth destroying, awareness robbing cars and trucks. Good.

Enjoy your good fortune.

Enjoy your bike.

Enjoy you now.

Enjoy being in the small nature of your body and wheeling across the large nature of our Earth.

Enjoy.

Happy Global Warming

me in roses
Well, the weather is,
what it is,
whether we like it
or not.

Hot
it is
and that's nice for getting
up barefoot
and lying in bed
naked

the flesh is good
the mind is good
breathing is good
life is good

and it's a hot day
and it's good

if you are free
today
come by
and lie on the floor
for forty minutes

come back to awareness
refine your attention
be happy
by being now
and learning

and connecting to
nature
the nature
of being in a human
brain/mind/body
all one

kind of like Dr. Bronner
soap
all one

and then Nature
outside
take some walks
of course
you do that anyway

love the sky
and the Earth
of course
you do that anyway

learning and being now
wow
come on by
and enjoy the Monday lessons.

they'll just be around for six weeks
then i'm off to
San Rafael for more Anat Baniel training
and to Ananda in
the Sierras
to get a certificate in Yoga
and then to Seattle
to attend the yearly
Feldenkrais Guild conference

so
come now
and enjoy
and learn
and love yourself
of course
you already do that

and to know yourself more
is to love yourself more

good

Nature Deficit Disorder? Or: Open the door and Walk on Outside

baby apples

Baby Apples at the Garden Park

NATURE DEFICIT DISORDER
All we need is another disorder, right? Especially if we sling it into the alphabet mix, and now have NDD to add to ADD and AHDD and MS and OCD and so on.

So, let's skip NDD and even skip nature deficit disorder except as a lead in to a central lack of our time: a disconnection of our everyday life with nature. As I write this on the computer, I can look out the window and see the grevillea in bloom, bright red against a blue sky, and that's still not the same as being outside and smelling the flower and breathing the fresh air.

Grivillea in April

Grivillea in April

Same with you, unless you are lucky enough to have some way to read this on a laptop outside. You are indoors, I am indoors, and still if I get out and walk and touch the earth with my feet each day I am much more complete as a person, if I breathe fresh air, and raise my head and eyes to clouds and birds and the vast blue of the sky, this expands my vision of what it means to be human.

Feet on earth, eyes and mind to the heavens: we are meant to be full.
A life indoors alone, a life deprived off real light, a life deprived of real air, that doesn't seem like a real life at all to me.

How about you?

I got the title of this essay from an interview with Richard Louv on his thoughts and ideas from his book: Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder, in the February 2007 Sun Magazine.

If you don't know Sun Magazine yet, go to SunMagazine.org and begin to feast on a wonderful world.

And do subscribe. They have no ads, and lots of poems and photographs in glorious black and white. And an amazing section, found nowhere else, called Reader's Write, on all sorts of openended topics, like Late at Night, Second Chances, Mothers, Weddings, Quitting. This month it's Praying.

And when you get your issue, go find a stream to read it near. Or a meadow. Garden. Back Yard. You got the sunny picture.

Loving Nature is another way of loving ourselves, since we are nature.

Ciao,
Chris

Earth, Now, Loving the Life we Could Slow Down and Know

iris
EARTH DAY AGAIN

Earth Day
Now
Earth Day
Now
We are alive
Now we know we in the Now
Or not
Now we can walk, or drive
Now we can breathe and smile
Or Rush Around
Now, we can watch the trees and the sky
Or worry about all we have to
Get Done

Now,
The Earth is waiting for us
Waiting for our feet
To walk
To caress
To join
To enjoy

Ah,
Yes.

Earth Day
Now day.
Wonder
Full

If we wake up
And
Let it be.

(And older essay,
from April of 2005, goes like
this Earth Day is Each Day.)
